As a kid living in Hawaii, I didn’t find anything unusual about the prominence of SPAM. It wasn’t until after returning to the mainland in the mid-90s that I started to think it might be something unique to the islands. It wasn’t just the absence of SPAM on menus that clued me in. The fact is, no one believed me about SPAM being a common restaurant menu item in Hawaii.

Hawaii, SPAM, Hawaii's Obsession with SPAM, Lyra Radford,

My friends thought I was exaggerating about the phenomenon until the movie 50 First Dates came out in 2004 and SPAM was on the restaurant menu. “Of course it is!” I said. “It’s everywhere in Hawaii!”

Spam and eggs, Hawaii, 50 first dates, Hawaiian Breakfast, Hawaii, SPAM, Hawaii's Obsession with SPAM,

As it would turn out, it wasn’t just my friends that were clueless about Hawaii’s love affair with SPAM – there are people still learning about it today. Although this enduring culinary phenomenon has deep historical roots, it still isn’t common knowledge outside of the islands.

How Did All This SPAM Madness Get Started?

Introduced to the islands during World War II, SPAM quickly became a beloved and affordable source of protein for the locals and military personnel stationed there. Over the years, SPAM has become an integral part of Hawaiian cuisine, giving rise to various cooking trends and creative dishes. Here are some of the popular cooking trends with SPAM in Hawaii:

1. SPAM Musubi: The Iconic Snack

SPAM Musubi

SPAM musubi is perhaps the most iconic and recognizable SPAM dish in Hawaii. It is a creative fusion of Japanese onigiri (rice ball) and American SPAM. The dish consists of a slice of grilled SPAM placed on a block of rice and wrapped with a strip of nori (seaweed). Some variations include adding teriyaki sauce or a sprinkle of furikake (a dry seasoning) on top of the SPAM. In Hawaii, SPAM Musubi is readily available at convenience stores, local markets, and even in restaurants, making it a convenient and delicious snack for locals and tourists alike.

2. SPAM Fried Rice: A Flavorful Delight

Another popular way to enjoy SPAM in Hawaii is tossed in with fried rice. SPAM fried rice is a comforting and satisfying dish that combines diced SPAM with fried rice, vegetables, and often scrambled eggs. The flavors meld together beautifully, creating a delightful mix of salty and savory goodness. It’s a staple at many local plate lunch spots and is frequently served as a side dish or as a hearty meal on its own.

3. SPAM Sushi: A Fusion Twist

Hawaii’s culinary diversity and influence from Japanese culture have led to the creation of SPAM sushi rolls. In these unique rolls, a slice of SPAM replaces the traditional fish, and it’s combined with ingredients like avocado, cucumber, and mayonnaise, all wrapped in nori and rice. SPAM sushi offers a delightful fusion of traditional Japanese flavors with the Hawaiian love for SPAM.

4. SPAM Breakfast Dishes: A Hearty Start to the Day

SPAM is often included in hearty breakfast dishes in Hawaii. Whether it’s served alongside eggs and rice, as part of a breakfast burrito, or in a breakfast sandwich, SPAM adds a filling and flavorful element to the morning meal. It has become a staple in many local breakfast spots, offering a taste of the islands to both residents and visitors. This isn’t limited to small “mom & pop” shops. You can head to any McDonalds in Hawaii and order SPAM and eggs on the breakfast menu. It’s that mainstream.

5. SPAM Noodles: A Comforting Combination

SPAM is also commonly incorporated into noodle dishes, such as Saimin (Hawaii’s version of ramen) or chow mein. The salty and savory flavor of SPAM complements the noodles and broth, creating a comforting and satisfying dish that is popular among locals.

6. Hawaiian SPAM Fries: A Savory & Tropical Fusion

The latest SPAM culinary trend to gain wide-spread popularity are Hawaiian SPAM Fries. A unique and delicious trend that combines the flavors of the Aloha State with the irresistible allure of crispy fries. Breaded and fried strips of SPAM, dipped in a sweet and tangy pineapple sauce that is distinctly Hawaiian. Additional dipping sauces have emerged since the dish started trending on social media. Top contenders include: Spicy Garlic Aioli, Pineapple Salsa, Sweet Chili Mayo and Teriyaki Glaze.

The love for SPAM in Hawaii goes beyond just being an affordable and convenient protein source; it has become a symbol of the islands’ cultural fusion and history. The unique cooking trends with SPAM, such as musubi, fried rice, sushi, breakfast dishes, and noodle creations, showcase the creativity and adaptability of Hawaiian cuisine. Whether you’re a local or a visitor to the islands, trying these SPAM-infused dishes is a must for experiencing the true flavors of Hawaii.

Kellogg’s CEO Gary Pilnick, had a Marie Antoinette moment with his call to action that sounded suspiciously like, “Let them eat cereal!”

As if the brand’s campaign to “give chicken the night off,” and have cereal for dinner back in 2022 wasn’t enough of a joke. Now, it seems, Kellogg’s CEO is actually glad the “cereal for dinner trend” is on the rise as Americans face more financial pressure. The tone deaf CEO spoke on the nation’s economic hardship and what Kellogg’s is doing to “reach the consumer where they are.” He then proceeded to tell us where we are, which apparently, is at cereal for dinner status.

Kellogg’s CEO Gary Pilnick  – Let them eat cereal! Kellogg’s brand cereal.

Kellogg’s CEO “Let them eat cake” moment

Despise Kellogg’s 2022 price increase, Pilnick rambled about cereals’s affordability during a CNBC interview:

“The cereal category has always been quite affordable, and it tends to be a great destination when consumers are under pressure,” Pilnick said. “If you think about the cost of cereal for a family versus what they might otherwise do, that’s going to be much more affordable.”

Kellogg’s CEO Gary Pilnick

With a $1 million base salary and over $4 million in incentive compensation last year, Pilnick just went on television to tell the peasants to eat cereal for dinner. Not just any cereal, his company’s cereal. So he can profit off those too broke to afford better.

Even CNBC host Carl Quintanilla, was taken aback enough to ask Pilnick if maybe his encouraging people to eat cereal for dinner could “land the wrong way.”

Oh no. Not a chance. Pilnick thinks it’s all hunky-dory.

“It’s landing really well right now,” Pilnick said with a big dopey smile on his face. “Cereal for dinner is something that is probably more on trend now, and we would expect to continue as that consumer is under pressure.”

Gary Pilnick

Pilnick noted a bowl of cereal with milk & fresh fruit is under $1.

When was the last time this guy did his own grocery shopping – the 1980’s? A piece of fruit alone is $1. A single serving of his cereal is also over $1. A large box of cereal is over $6 (and mostly air inside). Milk is over $5 a gallon. The math is not mathing Gary…

Kellogg's Cereal, Kellogg's CEO,
Single serving of Kellogg’s Cereal at Walmart

Do you know what actually will cost $1 (or $1.25) per serving?

Those individual frozen beef or chicken pot pies from Walmart. You get warm meat, veggies, and gravy inside a flaky pie crust…  That’s  a hell of a lot better for you than a cold bowl of sugar and red dye 40 for dinner.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), food prices increased by 5.8% in 2023. Prices in the cereal and baked goods category  rose 8.4% in 2023 — putting it behind only fats and oils at 9%, and sugar and sweets, another key ingredient in Kellogg’s cereals, which rose 8.7%.

So, not only did he pull the equivalent of Marie Antonette’s ‘let them eat cake’ blunder –  he lied.

The sound of an ice cream truck jingle can instantly transport you back to your childhood summers. But have you ever wondered where the concept of an ice cream truck came from? Why do ice cream trucks have music? And just what defines the perfect ice cream truck jingle? Well, believe it or not, ice cream truck music is both a science and an art form.

Where did the concept of ice cream trucks originate?

The concept of ice cream trucks, originally known as “screamers,” can be traced back to the 1920s in the United States. The trucks were initially designed to transport ice blocks to people’s homes. Electric refrigeration became more widespread, so the trucks were repurposed to sell ice cream and other frozen treats.

Harry Burt created the first official ice cream truck in 1920. He also founded the Good Humor Company, in Youngstown, Ohio.

Burt outfitted a truck with a freezer and bells that would ring to attract customers. Other ice cream companies soon followed suit. The ice cream truck quickly became popular across the United States.

During the Great Depression of the 1930s, the ice cream truck became an important source of income for many people. It provided a way to sell frozen treats directly to consumers. In the 1950s-60s, the ice cream truck became an icon of American childhood. With its distinctive jingle and colorful, cartoonish designs, how could it not?

The bell evolved into a song or “ jingle” to attract customers. Like all marketing tactics, elements of psychology were eventually applied

What’s the recipe for the perfect ice cream truck jingle? Mix the ideal tempo with a simple, easy to remember melody. A dash of nostalgia and repetition.

The truth is, there’s a science behind the perfect ice cream truck jingle that goes beyond a catchy tune. To start, there is the tempo and melody to consider.

The melody should be easy to remember, with a catchy hook. So it can be repeated. Studies have found that repetition is key to creating a memorable jingle.  It’s more likely to stick in people’s heads and create a sense of familiarity (and subsequently nostalgia). If the jingle is short, it also creates a sense of urgency and excitement.

The ideal tempo for an ice cream truck jingle is between 120 and 140 beats per minute. This tempo has been shown to be the most effective at creating a feeling of excitement and anticipation in listeners. It should be a pleasant sound; obviously harsh, grating tones should be avoided.

Volume also plays a critical role. The jingle should be loud enough to be heard from considerable distance without  being disruptive. Potential customers can hear the truck coming with plenty of time to get money ready. Also, keep in mind the acoustics of most neighborhoods. The sound will bounce around without the volume cranked too high.

The use of nostalgia in ice cream truck jingles is a powerful tool. It’s deliberately used for creating a sense of familiarity, safety, and comfort. Melodies reminiscent of nursery rhymes and old tunes like “The Entertainer” serve as a connection to the past. Thus, creating a positive association with the truck. Which makes people feel good about buying ice cream from the proprietor. It’s actually kind of sinister if you think about it too long.

What songs do ice cream trucks use?

The more popular ice cream truck songs are “Turkey in the Straw”, “Mister Softee Jingle”, and “Music Box Dancer”. Kids songs, “Do Your Ears Hang Low”, “Yankee Doodle”, “London Bridge Is Falling Down”, or “La Cucaracha” are also popular.

Ultimately, the perfect ice cream truck jingle is a combination of science and art. It needs to be catchy, memorable, and nostalgia inducing. While also being loud enough to be heard from a distance and pleasant to the ear. The jingle should create a sense of excitement and anticipation in listeners, reminding them of happy times from their childhoods. With these factors in mind, it’s no wonder ice cream truck jingles are a beloved part of summer for so many. It was planned that way!

Coat the tomato slices with seasoned cornmeal or flour and fry them until they turn beautifully golden and crispy. The result is a delectable contrast of textures, with the exterior offering a satisfying crunch and the interior providing a zesty burst of flavor. Pair these delicious treats with a creamy remoulade or tangy ranch dressing for an unforgettable experience.

Preserving green tomatoes through pickling allows you to savor their unique taste long after the harvest season. Create a brine using vinegar, water, sugar, and a medley of aromatic spices such as dill, mustard seeds, and peppercorns. Place sliced or whole green tomatoes into sterilized jars and pour the hot brine over them. Seal the jars and let the flavors develop over a few days. The resulting pickled green tomatoes are a tangy delight that can add a burst of flavor to sandwiches, cheese platters, and more.

4. Green Tomato Chutney: A Perfect Blend of Sweet and Savory

Dive into the world of sweet and savory flavors with green tomato chutney. Finely chop green tomatoes, onions, ginger, and garlic, and cook them with vinegar, sugar, and a mix of aromatic spices such as cumin, cinnamon, and cloves. Allow the chutney to simmer until the tomatoes soften and the flavors meld together. This tantalizing condiment pairs beautifully with meats, cheeses, and can be a delicious accompaniment to sandwiches.

On Monday July 3, 2023, along the Gulf of Mexico coast, the Florida Keys commemorated its bicentennial in the standard “go big or go home” fashion you’d expect from the Conch Republic. What better way to celebrate than with a ginormous Key lime pie and a shiny new world record? Organizers commissioned a monumental Key lime pie measuring over 13-feet in diameter, aiming to establish it as a certified world record.

Florida Keys, Key lime pie, World Record Key Lime Pie, Key West, 200years old, Birthday, bicentennial, biggest key lime pie,
It seems the ‘World Record For Largest Key Lime Pie’ is just over 13-feet.

The event marks the 200th anniversary of Monroe County’s official establishment by the Florida Territorial Legislature on July 3, 1823 (Which encompasses the entire chain of the Florida Keys and a portion of Everglades National Park) It also serves as a celebration of the region’s rich history.

Key West is the birthplace of Key lime pie, (and yours truly). The desert holds a significant place in the hearts, heritage, and tummies of those from the southernmost islands.

It’s said to have originated within the walls of Key West’s Curry Mansion, by a cook known as ‘Aunt Sally’. She made the first real Key lime pie for Florida’s first millionaire, William Curry, back in the late 1800s.

While many have tried debating this, in 2006, the Florida Legislature went ahead and designated Key lime pie as the “Official Pie of Florida” so that settles that.

The rich history of the Florida Keys doesn’t start and end with this decadent pie.

Some historic tidbits from the Florida Keys…

During the Civil War, Key West was under Union control, serving as a strategic base for the naval blockade of Confederate shipping.

The massive bicentennial rendition of this luscious dessert was crafted by local chefs…

It featured a classic graham-cracker crust, a velvety filling infused with the juice of thousands of Key limes, and a dollop of whipped cream, paying homage to the beloved flavors that have become synonymous with the Florida Keys. A little tart, a little sweet, all around unique.
